After receiving multiple complaints about a silver hatchback travelling on the wrong side of Cannifton Road, the Belleville Police Service arrested a 20-year-old local resident.

At about 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 21, witnesses observed the hatchback, later identified with a flat tire, striking curbs and disregarding stop signs in the east end of Belleville. Police say in a media release that the hatchback was then involved in a collision at the intersection of Bridge Street East and Herchimer Avenue, before fleeing the scene.

Officers located and intercepted the vehicle at Dundas Street and Herchimer Avenue. Upon interaction with the driver, who displayed signs of impairment, police proceeded with an arrest. The individual was transported to the Belleville Police Service for further investigation.

Following the inquiry, Demerise Gladue, a 20-year-old resident of Belleville, faced charges including impaired driving, operation with over 80mg, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Charges have not been proven in court. Gladue was released on an Undertaking with a scheduled court appearance in March. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries resulting from the collision.
