Wheelchair user pulled to ground and assaulted in Belleville, police say

A man has been charged after police say a person using a motorized wheelchair was pulled to the ground and punched in Belleville.

Belleville police responded to the area of Station and Burrell streets at about 2:15 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, following a report of an assault.

Police say an unknown man approached a person operating a motorized wheelchair, grabbed him and pulled him to the ground before punching him and fleeing the area on foot.

The wheelchair was also damaged during the incident, according to a Sept. 1 media release.

Officers reviewed video footage and identified a suspect. Police located the suspect at about 5:30 p.m. that day.

A 46-year-old Belleville man of no fixed address was arrested and charged with:

• Assault.
• Mischief under $5,000.
• Failure to comply with an undertaking.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.
