In a post to X, OPP reported that two men on snowmobiles plunged through the ice on Stoco Lake in Tweed on Saturday, Feb. 17.

“Thankfully, they were wearing floater coats” and are safe,” police said, adding that “it’s a busy weekend in the area with the Tweed Winter Carnival.”

Police encourage everyone stay off the ice.

“If you feel you must go out, watch for changes in ice colour,” the X post continues. “Even slight currents under the ice can drastically reduce ice thickness.”

Police added that while it might be safe in one section of a lake, its can be a different story just metres away.
