Trenton Curling Club to replace aging ice plant with $200K Trillium grant
A new ice plant is coming to the Trenton Curling Club thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
The funding was announced on Friday, Aug. 28, with Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp and Mayor Jim Harrison in attendance, among others.
“The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s grant is welcome news, allowing us to finally replace our aging ice
plant. This support ensures Trenton Curling Club members and local residents can enjoy our facility for
years to come” said Bill Russell, president of the Trenton Curling Club, in a statement.
Allsopp noted that the grant comes just as the club is about to celebrate 100 years in 2027, and that the funding will support “a modern, reliable ice plant that [will] allow sustained participation in the sport for years to come.
“Not only will this Ontario Trillium Foundation investment promote health and wellness in Quinte West, it will also create energy efficiencies and make operations more environmentally friendly,” the MPP’s statement continued.
“The club hit the button with this application.”
The club’s current ice plant includes components dating back to 1958, and relies on Freon, a refrigerant
that is harmful to the environment and no longer viable for long-term operation. According to a release from the Trenton Curling Club, the new system will “significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and ensure the sustainability of curling in Trenton for decades to come.”
The installation is set to begin in October 2026, and is expected to be completed ahead of the 2027–2028 curling season.
In addition to curling, the club serves as a meeting and banquet facility, supporting community connection and active living for people of all ages. The Trenton Curling Club also partners with local schools, offering volunteer-led curling instruction to youth across the region.
“Curling plays a vital role in the social and recreational well-being of members, including many
seniors who rely on the sport for connection, activity, and community,” notes a release from the club.
