Traffic stop on Highway 7 in Marmora and Lake leads to drug charges

Two people face drug trafficking charges after a traffic stop in Marmora and Lake Township.

OPP report in a media release that members of their Central Hastings detachment conducted a traffic stop on a rental car on Wednesday, June 5, at around 6:30 p.m. on Highway 7.

“Officers saw cannabis in the area of the driver, resulting in a search of the vehicle,” the media release explains.

As a result of the search, crack cocaine, cannabis, over $3,500 in cash and multiple cell phones were seized.

Two suspects face the below charges, which have not been proven in court.

Sydney Bunkuna, 25, of North York, has been charged under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with:

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 – two counts
  • Fail to comply with a probation order

This accused was held for a bail hearing on June 6 before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.

Jayanne Saunders, 19, of Scarborough, has been charged under the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and Cannabis Control Act with:

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Drive a vehicle with cannabis readily available

This accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville June 24.
