Speeding vehicle, flight from police leads to multiple charges for Belleville man

In the early hours of Saturday, March 16, Belleville police officers on patrol in the east end of the city witnessed a vehicle travelling at a significantly high speed, police report in a media release.

Police say the vehicle narrowly avoided colliding with several pedestrians crossing an intersection. Despite police attempts to pull over the vehicle, the driver reportedly refused to halt. Police persisted in their pursuit and later located the vehicle in the downtown area.

Following a successful intervention, the police detained the vehicle and its operator. Matthew Benn, a 25-year-old resident of Belleville, was arrested. Benn faces charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fleeing from law enforcement, driving under the influence, exceeding the legal alcohol limit, and various violations under the Highway Traffic Act.

Charges gave not been proven in court.

Benn was released under an undertaking, with a scheduled court appearance slated for April.
