Marmora Crowe Valley Lions Club is hosting its first “Trunk or Treat” on Halloween this year. Roughly 14 vehicles are expected to line up to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters from 5-7 p.m. on Forsyth Street in downtown Marmora.

“We’re very excited to hold this event,” said Lions Club president Cynthia Reid. “Everyone I’ve spoken to has said that they are going to bring their kids and it’s going to be great to see the community come together for this.”

Over her years living in Marmora, Ried said she has seen a steep decrease in the number of children who come to the downtown area during Halloween due to the lack of residential housing in the district. Since announcing the trunk or treat event, she said there’s been an increased interest to visit the downtown community.

“We’ve had a lot of people get on board. We’ve got a couple that live just north of town arranging for a zombie walk in the parkette across the street. Everyone is going to dress up and decorate their cars and we really just hope we get a lot of kids.”

Reid said while she hopes to see it grow year after year, she also sees it as a form of community support, particularly for the senior population of Marmora.

“It’s a lot of work for a senior to receive up to 200 children pounding on their door in one night. I hope this removes some of the stress for them and that parents feel like this is a good place to safely trick or treat.”

The street will be closed for the two-hour event to allow families to walk the street from trunk to trunk. Reid says some of the storefronts will be staying open as well.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Reid, “We have a lot of people who live outside of town coming in for it and we hope every year gets bigger and better.”
