‘Food brings everybody together:’ Federal government announces $22,050 for seniors’ cooking classes at Quinte West Public Library

Inviting seniors to gather, cook food together and socialize are the key ingredients behind new federal government funding for seniors’ cooking classes at the Quinte West Public Library.
Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette announced on Friday, May 29, 2026 that Quinte West Public Library is receiving $22,050 through Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program in support of “The Social Kitchen,” which will allow seniors to participate in cooking classes in order to promote social engagement among vulnerable seniors.
“Food brings everybody together,” Malette said following the announcement at the library on Creswell Drive.
“I want to commend the Quinte West Public Library for the very important work you’re doing and the vital programs you run for seniors.”
Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Government of Canada is providing a wide range of opportunities for seniors in Quinte West to participate in meaningful activities where they can share knowledge, skills, and experience to the benefit of others, Malette noted.
“Seniors are important members of our community, and I am proud to support initiatives to create connections within our region.”
Krista Richardson, programming and outreach librarian for Quinte West Public Library, said the library is proud of the success of its cooking programs and thrilled to receive the grant.
“The New Horizons for Seniors’ grant has made it possible to offer the community amazing cultural programs, cooking classes, and special events,” Richardson said in a statement.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to create social connections and bring people together through these programs.”
She said seniors can expect demonstrations on how to make food ranging from pasta to sourdough bread, for example.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program helps fund projects designed to keep seniors involved in their communities.
“Seniors are the backbone of our society and one of our fastest growing populations, and in this area in particular,” Malette said.
“With that comes a responsibility to our seniors. This is where the New Horizons for Seniors Program comes in.”
The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program. It provides funding for projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors and in their communities.
