Nicholson Catholic College’s (NCC) senior boys basketball team has brought gold home to Belleville.

The team secured the gold medal at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament on March 6 in Welland, Ontario, edging out Peterborough’s Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute (KCVI).

NCC defeated the fifth, first and second-seeded teams to arrive at a final game score of 62-47.

According to IB Coordinator and assistant coach Justin Walsh, NCC’s success hinged on their team defence throughout the tournament. This strategy proved effective in all their victories.

Their journey to the gold saw the team also face KCVI earlier in the season, when Kenner clinched the COSSA title in a closely matched game that ended in a score of 64-61.

With a season record of 25-7 and a flawless 12-0 performance in league play and playoffs, NCC showcased their cohesion as a team.

“Our team is very ‘together’. All the players supported each other throughout the season”, said Walsh who attributes the addition of two new players and strong defence to their success. “Our smothering defence wore teams down, which was key to us winning five games in the three days to capture the OFSAA ‘A’ Boys Basketball Championship title”, he said.
