The Belleville Police Service recently conducted a unique stolen vehicle investigation, in which they say no vehicle was actually stolen.

In a media release, police say that on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at about 1:30 a.m., officers began an investigation following a report of a stolen motor vehicle.

Police say that according to the vehicle’s owner, the theft occurred from a north-end business parking lot within the preceding hours. However, according to police, their investigation uncovered that the vehicle had not been stolen and that the owner had fabricated the incident to perpetrate insurance fraud. Consequently, Karanvir Singh, a 20-year-old resident of Belleville, faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and public mischief. Charges have not been proven in court.

Singh was granted release on an undertaking, with a scheduled court appearance slated for March.
