Two Belleville councillors are looking to engage and gather feedback from members of the public on the forthcoming Draft 2024 Operating Budget, as well as other important issues facing the community.

Ward 2 councillors Paul Carr and Kathryn Brown will host a town hall meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Gerry Masterson Community Centre (516 Harmony Rd).

“Every term, I have always hosted these town hall meetings in advance of both capital and operating budgets, as resident feedback is critical to effectively represent them,” Counc. Paul Carr told Quinteist. “I want to thank Councillor Brown for seeing the value in these town hall meetings, as we work as a team to represent Ward 2.”

Carr explained that he and Brown intend to provide updates on some important capital projects in Ward 2 that are planned and soon to be underway. Both councillors noted that as the Draft 2024 Operating Budget is due for public release on Feb. 1, they are unable to comment on specific topics at this time; however, there are sure to be numerous topics arise from it that will be of interest to community members.

“Additionally, we will continue to focus on housing, health care and other issues facing our community that municipalities seem to be front and centre on but that really require provincial leadership on those important files,” Carr added.

Residents will then be given the floor to ask questions of their councillors in a Q&A session.

“These meetings afford us the opportunity to hear firsthand what’s important and topical in our ward,” Brown commented. “Equally, I believe it’s important that the residents get to see their elected officials are working together to represent their interests.”

In a new initiative for this term, the city’s finance department will also release a community engagement survey to obtain feedback on the draft budget, following its public release on Thursday, Feb. 1.
