The Prince Edward County OPP are urging vigilance after a resident reported a local scam involving someone pretending to be a fire inspector.

In a media release, police say that the individual received a call from the “fire inspector,” who said they needed to conduct a fire inspection of the victim’s smoke alarms and other fire safety appliances.

“In previous cases, the inspector has asked the homeowner/ business employee to provide them with photos and then there is a fraudulent fine issued, sometimes paid in cryptocurrency,” police state.

“The fire service will never ask for gift cards or cryptocurrency,” Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue Fire Prevention Officer Mike Branscombe stated in the release. “Should we need to inspect a residence or business, we will attend with proper identification and fire service vehicles.”
